Russia Becomes the First Country in the World to Recognize the Taliban Government

Russia has accepted the credentials of a new Afghan ambassador, the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Thursday in a statement.

“We are convinced that the official recognition of the government of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan will give an impulse to the development of productive bilateral cooperation between our countries in various fields,” the ministry wrote.

The Taliban returned to power in August 2021 after American and NATO forces withdrew from Afghanistan. Since then, the country has been deteriorating, especially regarding women’s rights. Girls older than twelve are no longer allowed to attend school, employment opportunities for women are extremely limited, and their access to parks and other public spaces has been revoked.

At the end of last year, a law came into force that prohibits women from exercising, singing, or reciting poetry in public. Women are “encouraged” to cover their voice and body when they are outside the home. As a result of the new law, some television and radio stations have stopped broadcasting women’s voices.
